If you have children in your family this dish is sure to become one of their favorite. If you don’t know how to make Swedish meatballs – the main ingredient is love and the rest of the recipe you can read right here. It will take you no more than 45 minutes to enjoy the taste of this exquisite dish.
To make meatballs you will need:
- low fat beef – 600g
- breadcrumbs – 70g
- milk – 70g (about 1/3 of a water glass)
- 1 onion (to your taste)
- parsley
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- sunflower oil
To make gravy you will need:
- 1 spoonful of flour
- 1 glass of broth or water
How to cook:
Pour milk into breadcrumbs – they will bloat immediately – and add it to the mixture right away. It is not necessary to use all the breadcrumbs – the half may be just enough as well. Also you don’t need eggs in this recipe.
Make beef mince with the help of the mincing machine or blender. If you prefer doing it with the blender add 2-3 spoons of water and stir the mixture thoroughly. Add salt, chopped parsley and other spices to your taste (black pepper for example) and stir it all up one more time.
After that, roll the meatballs with your hands wet. Don’t make them too big – it is better to make them twice as big as a grape or the same size as that of a ping-pong ball (some magazines like to describe Swedish meatballs this way). But remember that the smaller the meatballs are the easier it will be for children to eat them.
Then use a frying pan to fry the meatballs on both sides until they get brownish crust. If you are cooking for adults it won’t harm to make the crust harder, which means to fry the meatballs longer.
While the meatballs are receiving the brownish crust, make sure you prepared a pot. Put a spoonful of flour into it and fry the flour till it gets creamy and has nut smell – then pour hot broth or water into it and bring the mixture to the boil. You can also add some cream or mix water with milk (fifty-fifty).
Then put the meatballs into the gravy that you have in the pot and let them stew for 15-20 minutes.
And finally we come to the point when it is necessary to know how to make Swedish meatballs actually look Swedish: serve them with sweet and sour cranberry or cowberry sauce and season it with chopped parsley.
Swedish meatballs also taste well with pasta, mashed potato or rise.
“Mother’s meatballs” is a Swedish specialty. And you can find a lot of its recipes on the internet. Some of them will tell you to mix minced mead with a raw chopped onion – others will claim that the best taste is achieved when you fry the onion before it. Some prefer the meatballs with brown sauce – others with unseasoned gravy; while traditional Swedish cuisine doesn’t accept sauce at all.
High-fat mince is used In Southern Sweden. And the farther you move to the north the fewer cases of people using minced pork you will see.
