Turkish cuisine was greatly influenced by Islam with its bans on pork, alcohol and strict fasts. Moreover other peoples that lived on the territory of Turkey: Persians, Greeks, Assyrians, Arabs, Armenians… – contributed to it. That is why modern Turkish cuisine may be similar to Mediterranean.

Turks learned how to preserve food for a long time, which helped them to make their diet more diverse even during the winter months. As a result modern Turkish cuisine offers a great number of recipes that can make any diet better balanced.

Any European who travels around Turkey will surely notice that Turks take their time while having a meal. An average lunch takes about 4-5 hours. Turks never eat alone or on the go. A tourist may take a simple Turkish lunch for a real Eastern feast because of the dishes that appear on the table like in a fairy-tale, and all of them are made from the best ingredients and with love. And it doesn’t matter whether you are in an expensive restaurant or in a small café – the smell and taste of Turkish dishes won’t leave you indifferent.

But of course we can endlessly talk about Turkish cuisine, try to describe unusual taste of the food or even dream about travelling to the country itself, still – as a Turkish proverb says – “fine words butter no parsnips”. Instead you can go to the kitchen and cook a Turkish dinner or supper for your family and friends. You can make Turkish meatballs described on this page for a start. And who knows may be you will like it.
